I have recently embarked on a cleanse and restore system through my favorite essential oil company. There are multiple components to the cleanse and restore routine one of which is to take enzymes. This is the kit:
Now, prior to me embarking on this little journey I knew little about enzymes, what they do, and why we need to incorporate them into our daily nutritional journey. However, I am learning a lot about these very important components that our bodies need to function at their best.
Because I am a super cautious person when it comes to putting things into my body, I knew I needed to begin researching this journey. After all, I need to know that I am not harming it and that I am indeed helping it.
Thus my research on enzymes began.
Needless to say, what I am learning is very interesting. So, to help others on their journeys here is the plain and simple of what enzymes do and why our bodies benefit from them.
We are all born with a certain amount of enzymes. As we grow and use those beneficial stores, however, we run out of them as our pancreas only makes a certain amount of them. Consider one who can handle milk as a child and grows to become lactose intolerant. Why is this? Well as we age our bodies make less lactase (an enzyme). The outcome? The inability to digest foods properly. Resulting in an increase of bloating, inflammation, and gas. While we could embark on a raw foods diet where our bodies don’t need the enzymes because they are naturally occurring in those uncooked fruits and vegtables, I am guessing this is likely an extreme that most of us won’t go to. Or if we do, we won’t be able to stick to it. So what is one to do?
This is where ingesting enzymes comes into play.
I am learning that our bodies actually expel an abundant amount of energy in simply digesting its foods. Like my youngest said to me last night – as I was explaining it to her – “That’s why I am so tired after I eat!”
She may well be right on the money.
Consider your Thanksgiving Day meals, or those mid-afternoon slumps. We have all experienced them. If we are using a lot of our energy stores on digesting food alone, one can assume that this may well be why we lack more energy as we age.
Now, I’m well aware there are a plethora of things that can affect one’s energy stores. But to know this one aspect takes up so much energy makes me willing to consider how much better I could feel by incorporating something as small as a vitamin filled with enzymes before each meal? And how much better could our bodies begin to feel if they could direct the energy used in digestion to another area that needs help? Needless to say, it’s a question we shouldn’t ignore.
So how do enzymes work?
If you consider fruit sitting out on your counter for a few days, you know that it begins to get mushy completely on its own right? Do you know why? It is because raw fruit already has the enzymes built into them. This in turn allows them to break down on their own. However, if you put a steak out on the counter it’s not going to do anything but sit there right? It’s going to sit there whole and eventually grow stuff on it right? Now, consider that picture in your stomach. YUCK!
Thankfully our bodies do have some enzymes that help to break down those larger meals. However, remember we’re working with fewer and fewer enzymes if we aren’t restoring them. This means the process of breaking down the foods in our systems take longer and requires more energy. It also means we risk having food stuck in our system causing sluggishness and eventually if we’re not getting rid of it they can aid in other problems including inflammation – which is a big problem. Again, consider that steak sitting out on the counter. This can’t be good for our bodies.
So what can we do?
Thankfully we can take enzymes and in doing so give our bodies what they need to be able to function optimally. I, personally, am taking and am completely satisfied with doTERRA’s Terrazyme.
It’s as simple as taking one to three pills right before I eat a meal. If the meal is light I am only taking one, if I’m eating a steak…well, I’m taking 3! 🙂 I hope this is helpful to you all.
