Texas Might Have Mums, But Tennessee’s Got Swag

If you’re familiar with the Texas Homecoming Mum, then I believe you will want to hear the story behind the Tennessee Homecoming Mailbox Swag! 🙂

Here’s how the homecoming mailbox swag came to be.

A couple of weeks ago a friend casually asked if I would make her a bow for her mailbox. She has a daughter in the local High School band and – wanting to share her pride for the upcoming homecoming game – thought I might be able to come up with something. Being that she was the second mom over the course of a few weeks to ask me, I took a step forward to make something for my two friends.

Now people who know me well, know I’m a bit over-the-top. They know once I decide to go for something, I naturally put my whole being into that project. This was no different.

Needless to say, my mailbox “bow” quickly became a mailbox swag!

After gathering several supplies from Hobby Lobby, I came home and began working on this creation for my friends. Now, there were a few obstacles to work through. One, is the fact that in our neighborhood the address plaque hangs above the actual mailbox. This obstacle meant I couldn’t make something that would sit on top of the box itself. So, I threw that idea out the window. As I considered what I did have to work with the idea of creating a piece that would hang down the actual mailbox pole came into play. Now I was thinking.

As the pieces all came together, I took my creation out to the mailbox to try it on. It was over-the-top, but it was perfect! I sent some pictures to my two friends and they responded saying, “Yes! I want one.”

On a whim, one of them mentions that this town would go crazy if I were to post the mailbox swags – in the school colors – for sale on our local 411 Facebook page. So, with homecoming on the horizon, I thought, what the heck I’ll post a picture and see what happens.

What happens next with the mailbox swag sends me reeling!

Comment after comment began to come in from this one post on Facebook. “I want one,” “Me please,” “How can I get one of these?” and on and on it went. 140 mailbox swags later, we had a business on our hands that I never even planned. I was just being me. Making stuff and posting it.

In the midst of these orders coming in I had another high school contact me about their homecoming, and yet another individual about using these for an upcoming fundraiser this Christmas season.

Needless to say, God is showing me something BIG that I want to share in the midst of all of this.

I have always been a person that has felt the need to do – it is engrained in me. If I wasn’t doing it, no one else would. Along the way, I became a human doing, as opposed to a human being. But in the midst of me continuing to fight the urge to be a doer, God asked me to simply be. And in honoring this request and fighting the urge to go after life He did what He does best. He showed up unexpectedly. And – in so doing – made sure I knew He was still fighting for me.

What a relief this is to my soul.

I am having so much fun making these, watching my family get involved and even working with friends here and there. But more than anything I am grateful that I have been shown this really important lesson. I don’t have to seek out and do in order to receive. He is in the picture asking simply if I will follow Him and trust Him.

What is it today that you need to trust Him with? Remember to not listen to voice of fear – it isn’t from Him. Instead, trust, and give Him all of you, and watch as He shows up on the scene.

To Him, I give the glory!

Till next time,
